Livestock Censuses

Livestock census in India covers not just livestock but also all other animal resources, including poultry and fisheries. Livestock censuses are also an important source of information on agricultural machinery and implements.

Livestock censuses are conducted quinquennially. Work for the censuses is coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, and implemented by relevant departments of the State governments.

Livestock censuses provide data on number of animals of different types. No data are collected on production from animal resources, or on value of animals.

NSS Surveys on Land and Livestock Holdings

NSS Surveys on Land and Livestock Holdings (schedule 18.1) are conducted roughly once in ten years. These surveys collect data on number of different types of animals owned and possessed by households. Apart from data on land and livestock holdings, the surveys also provide limited information on agricultural implements and machinery. No data are collected on production from animal resources, or on value of animals.
